Simple Recipes Your Pup Will Love
As pet parents, we always want the best for our furry best friends. That includes what goes into their bellies! While store-bought treats are convenient, they often contain hidden preservatives, artificial flavors, and hard-to-pronounce ingredients.
Making your own dog treats at home is surprisingly easy, much cheaper in the long run, and lets you control every single ingredient. Plus, your kitchen will smell amazing while you bake!
Here are three ridiculously easy, vet-approved dog treat recipes you can whip up this weekend.
3-Ingredient Peanut Butter Banana Bites
- 2 ripe bananas, mashed
- 2 cups whole wheat flour (or oat flour for a grain-free option)
- 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (CRITICAL: Ensure it is Xylitol-free, as Xylitol is toxic to dogs!)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, mix the mashed bananas and peanut butter together until smooth.
- Gradually add the flour until a dough forms. If it’s too sticky, add a little extra flour.
- Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness and use cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Let them cool completely before serving!
2-Ingredient Pumpkin & Oat Breath Fresheners
- 2 1/2 cups rolled oats (or oat flour)
- 1/2 cup pure canned pumpkin puree (make sure it’s 100% pumpkin, not pumpkin pie mix)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- If using whole rolled oats, blend them in a food processor until they reach a flour-like consistency.
- Mix the oat flour and pumpkin puree in a bowl until a dough forms. Add a splash of water if it’s too dry.
- Roll the dough into small, marble-sized balls and place them on a lined baking sheet. Flatten them slightly with a fork.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until hard and crunchy.
No-Bake 4-Ingredient “Pupsicles”
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (unsweetened, no artificial sweeteners)
- 1/2 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
- 1 ripe banana
- A splash of low-sodium chicken broth or water
Instructions:
- Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
- Pour the mixture into silicone ice cube trays or specialized dog-treat molds.
- Freeze for at least 3-4 hours until solid. Pop them out and watch your dog happily crunch away!
Storage Tips
Since these treats don’t contain chemical preservatives, they need to be stored properly to stay fresh:
- Baked Treats: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or freeze them for up to 3 months.
- Frozen Treats: Keep them stored in a freezer bag or container for up to 2 months.
